Chapter Eight

Noire

“This is a shitty place to meet,” I said as I glanced around the location. The bar was seedy at best, filled with more drunks than anything else. Everyone needed a respite from the governmental mandates, but drinking had become a national obsession.

There was that word again. Obsession.

I shivered, trying to keep my hand from shaking as I brought the glass of whiskey to my lips. With every move on the hard bench, the soreness on my bottom was a reminder of lurid and wicked punishment, brutal sex. I’d attacked him, almost able to take control. Then... I shuddered at the way everything about the man had dominated me.

He fucked you in the ass on your balcony. Anyone could have seen the sinful act.

The words had played in my mind the entire morning. Rogue’s final statement left me feeling anxious, even looking over my shoulder. The change in him in just a single day was inconceivable. I couldn’t tell if he was acting more human or more like a machine.

“Yeah, but no one would dare to look for us here,” Chris said, the same grin crossing his face that I was so used to.

“Does that mean you found something?” I’d risked meeting him here, but at least if we were seen, I wouldn’t be disobeying the government rules.

He took a pull on his beer before looking from right to left. We were seated in a beaten-up old wooden booth and far removed from anyone else in the joint. We were also in the back of the place and away from the window overlooking the street. I’d never known Chris to be this clandestine before. “I have a buddy who works in one of the other cyborg facilities. I gave him a call.”

“Yeah?” I leaned in closer, no doubt excitement crossing my face.

“Don’t do that. Just hold on. As you can imagine, he wasn’t interested in talking to me. Had to pull in a huge favor.” He swirled his bottle, not looking me in the eyes.

“Okay, spill it, partner.”

He glowered at me. “He mentioned that there is some top-secret file that nobody talks about. All he knows is that certain cyborgs are being tested for use in assassinations, although that’s not the term he used as you can imagine. I put two and two together.”

“What?” I groaned out loud, grabbing my drink to shut down my own noise. My theories were starting to make more sense.

“Yeah. I groaned too. Trust me. Doesn’t make a lot of sense since Congress specifically mandated that no cyborgs were to be used for any military action. I have no idea how they’d be able to control the cyborgs in the first place.”

I sat back, thinking about the concept, then sat up straight again. “That doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. You tell the weary public that cyborgs are only going to be used for protection and domestic activities then design them to kill off the rest of our enemies. Not bad if you ask me.”

“Works right into that conspiracy theory of yours,” Chris said, snorting.
